本書作者Zhang, Jun（張珺）是一名人類學者與城市研究學者。她師從人類學家Helen F. Siu（蕭鳳霞），在耶魯大學人類學系取得博士學位，現今是香港城市大學公共與國際事務系的助理教授。本書是張珺多年田野工作的成果，也由其在2009年完成的Driving toward Modernity：an Ethnography of Automobiles in Contemporary China博士論文改編而來。
