The causes of dizziness/vertigo are heterogenous. Peripheral vestibular, central vestibular and systemic abnormalities should be taken into consideration when approaching a dizzy patient. An accurate diagnosis is the key to successful treatment. A single-specialty intervention often fails to achieve comprehensive assessment and a multidisciplinary intervention is a preferred approach. Although most patients with vertigo can be diagnosed by detailed history taking and neuro-otologic examination, there are still some patients who need laboratory tests for objective information to document functional status and to facilitate diagnosis. At present, these laboratory tests are often distributed among different departments in most medical institutes. There is a lack of horizontal connection and it is difficult to form an overall clinical information. In this article, we describe the principles and diagnostic values of related tests and propose a setting of multidisciplinary dizziness lab based on the cooperation between otology and neurology. In this setting, the tests are classified into core, extended and optional sets. It is expected to provide a blueprint for medical institutes that are interested in establishing a multidisciplinary dizziness lab. |
