This research combines the TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) concept with Space Syntax network analysis method to construct the elements (6D) that should be considered in walking-friendly environmental planning around the TOD station and as a guide for urban development. Our observation of current TOD development in Taiwan suggests that walking environment planning in surrounding areas of MRT stations is solely based on distance centered from a station. Because of the lack of consideration of different local applicability among the TOD areas, the road conditions are quite different in each locality and environment. Especially, the connectivity of the pedestrian walking networks among the localities varies. Therefore, the TOD areas are divided into two categories, namely TOD -W (walking) and TOD-P (private vehicle). Additionally, the 6D elements of TOD are brought up by adding a new consideration of “differentiation and local applicability within the reach of mass transit”, formulating an evaluation system to study its significance. To find a novel concept of TOD development, this study applies Space Syntax to quantitatively analyze the pedestrian walking networks. The pedestrian space can be properly considered by breaking the limits of ‘walking’ analysis, under the circumstance of axis and topology conversion. The locality convenience value (R3) can illustrate the reality of the pedestrian network. Furthermore, the TOD walking environment friendliness value (Rw) can be concluded to improve the study. Evaluating the walking environment current condition around the station with these methods, a comprehensive discussion can be conducted. |
