For students majoring in Japanese, due to impacts of COVID-19, they have been forced to postpone or give up their participation in international exchange programs such as studying abroad or internships and respond to declines in labor market participation, change in employment, and delayed career formation in recent years. The pandemic has brought insecurity and uncertainty to students majoring in Japanese and hence, this study utilizes empirical data to examine career anchors and employment value orientation of new graduates of the Japanese Department. Analytic results of this study find that new graduates of the Japanese Department score higher in lifestyle (LS), autonomy (AU), and technical/functional competence (TF). They focus more on talent and professionalism to work freely and independently and pursue work life balance (WLB). In terms of employment value orientation, they like suitable and look for the sense of achievement and personal growth. When necessary, they are willing to change careers to obtain better working conditions and improve vocational skills. On the other hand, in the job market with horizontal mobility, they will not let businesses to dominate their career formation. They are less likely to work at the same company for one's entire career until retirement. |
