In this paper, the term “tie” refers to the “ties that form a society by tightly linking two things, such as blood ties, territorial ties, and interests ”. In modern society, primary ties based on relatives and neighbors tend to be loose. However, the primary ties that appear to have become looser and diluted have not necessarily turned into really weak ties. Famous Japanese writer Haruki Murakami had a cold relationship with his father in his youth. After graduating from high school, he left his hometown and entered Waseda University in Tokyo. Since then, he has not returned to his parents’ home very often. At first glance, the ties between Haruki Murakami and his father, or the ties between Haruki Murakami and his hometown seem to have weakened, but after examining the essays, I realized that this is not the case. This paper considers Haruki Murakami's ties in the essays “Kobe made Aruku” and “Neko wo Suteru”. |
