Since the Beijing government introduced the Hong Kong National Security Law (henceforth 'NSL') in June 2020, the city's human rights, rule of law, education, and academic freedom have seriously been undermined. This article seeks to discuss how the implementation of NSL has led to the erosion of the cornerstones of the city. It will first look at the education landscape and the limited degree of academic freedom that remains under the implementation of NSL. Subsequently, it will examine the implications of the enactment of Article 23 of Basic Law, a potential 'upgrade' of the already existing laws regarding national security. Lastly, it will give a conjecture of how, coupled with big data, surveillance of the city will only become tighter than ever. Welcome to the 'Brave New Hong Kong'. |
