The Archives of Shihmen Reservoir Construction Committee contains records related to the construction of Shihmen Reservoir mainly from 1954 to 1966. These records are not only exceptionally well-preserved official records on Taiwan’s water conservancy infrastructure, but also authentic historical records on the interaction between Shihmen Reservoir and the people. The archival collections are currently preserved and managed by the Northern Region Water Resources Office of the Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The digitization and value-added project on these archival collections was launched in May 2020 under the collaboration of the Northern Region Water Resources Office and the Institute of Taiwan History, Academia Sinica. This article first traces the historical context of the archival collections and the composition of records. Then, introduces the archival arrangement at the series level according to the principles of provenance. Further, contents of each archive series are abstracted to present an overall view of the precious historical materials, followed by selected special records. Finally, with reference to the compilation principle of the primary records, the original arrangement of the archives is reconstructed to reveal the actual process and experience of the reservoir construction. With the Archives digitized, compiled and made open to the public, it is hoped that more unique historical stories and local common memories of the Shihmen Reservoir can be brought to light. |
