Adventure recreational activities embody elements of uncertainty and are accompanied by certain levels of worry among recreationists. Clarifying the sources of worry over adventure recreation activities is conducive to developing preventive and coping strategies. This study conducted in-depth interviews with 21 land-based and water-based adventure recreationists. The interview transcripts were analyzed through a content analysis. The results indicated that the sources of concern over adventure recreation activities consisted of human, environment, and management aspects. The human sources of worry involved the lack of ability, being poorly equipped, and carelessness factors. The environmental sources of worry entailed environmental hazard and poor environmental adaptation factors. The management sources of worry originated from the improper maintenance of equipment and professional negligence factors. Subsequently, preventive and coping strategies from the recreationist and management perspectives were proposed as references for adventure recreationists. The strategies could help managers develop relevant countermeasures. |
