“Civil society”is an abstract concept that seems simple but difficult to define. Basically, it is a combination of sociology, political science, public administration, economics and even philosophy. Although there are different definition and interpretation of this concept, it is often used to describe and explain the intricate relationships between nations, societies, organizations, and individuals. After Taiwan underwent economic development in the 1970s and democratic reforms in the late 1980s, the vitality of its citizens were stimulated and this further promoted the development of civil society. However, the development of information technology in the 1990s and the popularization of the Internet in the 21st century have changed human society, Now the exploration of the connotation of civil society also extends from the 'physical society' to the 'virtual society'. Under this developmental context, how have Taiwan's academic communities conducted research or discussions on civil society for this long periods of time? In different periods of political and social development, what were the characteristics of the profile of Taiwan's civil society? What did it look like in the academic community? These issues seem to have not received attention and analysis so far. Based on this motivation, in addition to sorting out the conceptual connotation and theoretical viewpoints of civil society through literature review, this research also conducts text mining on the contents of journal articles related to 'civil society' in Taiwan from 1987 to 2020. Our preliminarily results presents the diversity and richness of Taiwan's civil society. The resultsof this research is expected to be beneficial to the theoretical construction of explaining the development of civil society in Taiwan. |
