This research explores the experiences of two women (aunt and niece) from the sameVietnamese family marrying into the same Taiwanese family and becoming the motherand daughter-in-law. The research showed that even though they are from differentphases and positions in life, their actions break the barrier of the environment and showtheir agencies. They live within the traditional patriarchal family structure, however,they were reluctant to be manipulated by the patriarchal structure. The aunt secured herposition in the husband's family with her action, supported her family of origin inVietnam, and showed her power to take care of her niece. As for the niece who becamethe daughter-in-law due to the marriage, her vision of marrying into Taiwan includedlooking for a good job and following the role model of her aunt. The agency showed inher behavior of pursuing her dream. In conclusion, the author saw the agency of selfactualizationfor change in the cross-cultural marriage from these two immigrant women. |
