Eastern Orthodoxy has a long history and unique cultural traditions, but compared with Catholicism and Protestantism, it has never been able to fully expand into the Asian Pacific region, despite its more than 300 year history there. This paper centers the discussion on the development of the Russian Eastern Orthodox Church in contemporary Chinese society, focusing on the historical background for its transmission into Chinese society and its growth in Hong Kong. It analyzes the current situation of expansion of the contemporary Sts. Peter and Paul’s Parish Church in Hong Kong, in order to understand the phenomenon of diversity in Eastern Orthodoxy within Chinese society. As a western religion, Eastern Orthodoxy exhibits obvious differences from traditional Chinese religions in terms of beliefs and culture. This research offers a microstudy of Eastern Orthodoxy in Hong Kong by attempting to better understand the issue of the development of the Russian Eastern Orthodox church in Hong. In doing so, the research may help scholars to better fully grasp the development of Eastern Orthodoxy in Chinese society. |
