Futuru Tsai’s ‘Amis Hip Hop poses questions concerning Indigenous cultural sovereignty through what at first appears to be an embarrassing gap between an average viewer’s sense of Indigenous identity and the creative ways Indigenous people make use of colonially derived materials. In an early scene in the film that introduces age set naming practices in the ‘Atolan ‘Amis Nation(都蘭部落), the camera focuses on ‘Atolan ‘Amis sculptor Siki Sufin as he relates the origin of his age set name, Lakancing(拉贛駿), which commemorates Taylor Wang’s 1985 voyage on the Space Shuttle Challenger. |
