Since 2014, the People’s Republic of China has established so-called “re-education camps” to detain Uyghurs in East Turkestan (known in China as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region). To investigate the “continued atrocities and possible genocide” against Uyghurs involved in the re-education camps, the World Uyghur Congress has promoted the establishment of a “Uyghur Tribunal”, hoping that by bringing evidence to light, the international community will take action to arouse international criticism of the Chinese government and hold it accountable for its crimes. This article explains the background, composition, trial process and judgment of the “Uyghur Tribunal” and its impact. |
