Large-scale political protests broke out in the long-peaceful city of Hong Kong because of the failed promises of universal suffrage as stated in the constitution as well as gradually reducing freedom. China has been intervening and reneging on its agreement to allow autonomy and a separate economic and political system in Hong Kong. Due to the public disapproval of the government’s proposal of a change of the electoral system which was far from the international standards of universal suffrage, the Umbrella Revolution, which was basically a peaceful occupy movement, and the Fishball Revolution, which was large civil unrest, occurred in 2014 and 2016, respectively. |
