This research is a longitudinal survey spanning two decades. It aims at understanding the current situation of Chinese teachers in Taiwan and their satisfaction with the teaching environments through questionnaire surveys. The subjects of the study are teachers from universities and private Chinese language centers in Taiwan. This study conducted five questionnaire surveys with the same format in every other 5 years, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2016 and 2020. Such periodical surveys could provide a whole picture of both the current work situation and other composition of domestic Chinese teachers in the past two decades. Through the surveys, we could compare the similarities, differences and trends of changes, and thus record the instructional environmentsof Chinese teachers in Taiwan at the beginning of the 21st century. The surveys found that all satisfaction items have fluctuated in the past two decades, and there are no items that keep improving. Although the satisfaction level of almost all items in 2016 was higher than that in 2010, all items showed a downward trend in 2020, including salary, hardware equipment, communication across language centers. The overall working environment and the future development of work have declined significantly, even lower than that in 2005 and 2010. However, the three items of 'work motivates self-growth', 'proud of work', and 'sense of accomplishment in work' have all improved. This shows that the internal morale of the Chinese teachers is still very high, and the teachers are spiritually satisfied with Chinese teaching. |
