"The plant parasitic nematodes research in Taiwan Tung-Tsaun Tsay Department of Plant Pathology, National Chung Hsing University The research of plant parasitic nematodes in Taiwan could be dated back to 1895. Citrus nematode reported by Dr. Sawada in 1913 was the first recorded plant parasitic nematode (PPN) in Taiwan. Over one hundred years, the land is intensively cropped and PPN nematodes also propagate prospectively. However, few attention or research grant was used to address the PPN problems. There are 29 genera and 78 species of PPN reported in Taiwan to date. Among them, root-knot and lesion nematodes are of the most importance. The “one village one crop” policy leads to mono-cropping in a single production area. As a consequence soil sickness is a major problem. Nematicides are commonly applied to control PPN in Taiwan. Because of the awareness of environmental conservation and food safety, research has accelerated to develop sustainable and organic agriculture. The biological control tactic is successfully applied for PPN management in the vegetable and fruit crops, using either plant extracts or beneficial microorganisms." |
