"Patients with chronic illness often need psychological intervention. The study evaluates the effect of a 6 hours group counseling based on the“promoting positive mental health BMI learning program”on positive mental health and depression among patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). With a pretest-posttest and follow-up equivalent group design, 28 adult MG patients were assigned into a treatment group (n=14) or a control group (n=14). Both groups completed the mental health BMI indicator and the PHQ-9 scale before and after the intervention. Compared to the control group, the treatment group improved significantly on the Identity dimension. Also, the treatment group showed significant improvement on the posttest and follow-up scores of mental health BMI indicators in the total, the Mindfulness dimension, the Identity dimension and the PHQ-9 scale. Participants with poor mental health (BMI<21) in the pre-test also demonstrated improvement in the post-test. The control group showed no significant difference in the pre-test and the post-test scores. Our results suggested that the program could be conducted with more MG patients to further evaluate its effect on positive mental health BMI and depression." |
