More than 10 years have passed since Amazon.com launched the e-book reader of Kindle in 2007. The e-book reader has become thinner and more portable. With continuous development and integration of hardware and software, users not only pay attention to the variety and quantity of books but also care for the interactivity and operation of the e-book even more. This study explored the interface design differences of the e-book information construction when using the tablet computer for reading e-books, and carry out experiments for verification. This experiment was designed on the basis of three factors of the text direction (horizontal text/vertical text) × direction of function bar (horizontal function bar/vertical function bar) × touch mode (by finger/stylus). The operation time performance and click times were recorded through task analysis method, so as to analyze the effect of variables on the usability and provide suggestions on the future design of e-book information construction for designers. After verifying the effects of three variables on the e-book information construction via experiment, this study proposes the following three design principles: (1) as for the text direction, the horizontal format is recommended for it because horizontal text will have better usability performance for most functions and more subjects in the survey of experiment prefer the horizontal text; (2) as for the direction of function bar, the horizontal function bar is recommended because it can offer a better operation performance in the e-book information construction; (3) as for the touch mode, finger touch should be used as the main touch mode , and functions requiring accurate operation should be avoided in the design of e-book information construction. It is hoped that the findings will make contributions to the research fields relevant with e-book and its interface design. |
