Audits' characteristics are critical to the results of auditing. Prior studies find that audits' expertise in industries affects auditing quality. However, the literature does not examine how auditors' tendency affects auditing quality. This study empirically tests whether auditors' tendency or companies' audit risks determine the contents of key audit matters (KAMs) for the year of 2017. Our research design measures auditors' tendency by the contents of their KAMs for the prior year (i.e., 2016) regarding revenue recognition. We measure companies' auditing risks by the differences in revenues for 2017 between companies' filed numbers and audited numbers. Empirical results indicate that the contents of 2017 KAM reflect auditors' tendency but not companies' auditing risks. This conclusion remains valid even when we use two-stage regressions to mitigate endogeneity, and when we use different measures of the key variables. |
