While passing the DNA sampling act in Taiwan, all the decision makers had the common concept of establishing a National DNA database containing the DNA profiles for the use of DNA and DNA analysis in law enforcement. This Act is enacted to ensure public safety, assist in forensic identification, assist locating missing people, confirm the biological parent-child relationship, enhance the crime investigation efficiency, and prevent crimes effectively. This article examines the development of the Taiwan National DNA Database and argues that privacy and the protection of personal data play an important role. Maintaining the appropriate scope of compulsory DNA sampling for sexual and serious crime offenders and increasing the financial grant to the competent authority to eliminate the backlog of the forensic burden and remove those DNA samples and profiles of innocents are required. |
