Writing skills is an important aspect of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, and correction of the composition is critical in ensuring whether the students improve in their writing skills. Traditionally, writing has been considered to be paper-based, indicating that correcting essays is a labor-intensive process. However, the advancement of technology use for pedagogical purposes makes it different. In 2015, National Taiwan Normal University RCPET and National Chiao Tung University jointly developed a new system named Automated Essay Scoring for Han (AES-Han). This automatic evaluation and feedback system is the first Chinese composition auto-correction system in Taiwan. This paper describes how the author used AES-Han to design a Chinese writing course, the applied method within a classroom setup and the students’ responses during the pandemic. The experiment was conducted on 23 foreign students from the Applied Chinese Language Department, with a combination of classroom teaching and online learning, over an 18-week period. The experiment was done via observation of the students’ performance and by conducting surveys to understand students’ feedback on using AI to support Chinese learning. Through this research, this first ever AES-Han automated essay scoring system applied in classroom has been evidenced effectively improving students’ writing capability. The results of this study have significant contribution to Chinese language teaching amid Covid-19 Pandemic. |
