Maintaining the dignity of patients is the core element of nursing. Dignity therapy (DT), a novel, brief, individualized, and evidence-based psychotherapeutic intervention, helps patients reflect on important life issues through interviews and generate a 'legacy' that captures their most important memories and the essence of the lessons they have learned in life. DT can improve a sense of ego-integrity, help patients passing on their legacy and provide emotional support for their families. For healthcare providers, such intervention promotes the practice of narrative medicine approach in clinical setting. The authors hope to further explore the potential effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility of dignity therapy in Taiwanese culture, make revisions, and evaluate the effectiveness of DT from the perspectives of patients, family members, their significant others, and healthcare providers in order to promote the application of culturally appropriate, evidence-based dignity therapy, deepen awareness, reflection and action on dignity, and enhance the ability in dignity care. |
