Past authoritarian rule imposed upon us misguided values, fostering obedience to authority. While Taiwan has undergone democratization, our erroneous mindset of authoritative rule has not completely changed. This is evident when, upon the arrest of Lee Ming-Che by China, many Taiwanese individuals continuously urged Lee's wife to compromise with China. Similarly, as Taiwan faces aggression from China, there are those who perceive Taiwan as the provocateur. If these f lawed thought patterns persist, we can never truly emerge from the history of authoritarianism, nor effectively confront China's oppression. To discard past erroneous values, we must draw strength from Taiwan's history of resistance against authority. Within Taiwan's history of resistance lies a steadfast commitment to human rights and courageous opposition to authoritarianism. Only by truly understanding Taiwan's past history of resistance can we change our mindset, comprehend that the pursuit of freedom comes with a cost, and be willing to pay that cost to safeguard all that we enjoy today. Finally, we must understand China in order to grasp the differences in values between Taiwan and China. We stand to defend the values we cherish, resisting China's aggression. |
