Aerosol therapy, a common treatment of pediatric care, can relieve symptoms of respiratory tract infections. However, such treatment has not been effectively given to children of all the ages. The completion rate of aerosol therapy in the study setting (pediatric unit) was only 33.3% in 2016. The situation analysis showed that poor result was due to the nursing staff's incomplete knowledge of aerosol therapy; the study unit lacked aerosol therapy leaflets and related therapeutic play tools. Furthermore, other reasons included the long duration of such treatment, changing family caregivers, and language barriers between nursing staff and caregivers. The project strategies include deploying continued nursing education, designing care guide leaflets and posters, developing QR code link to the multi-languages health education videos, and creating therapeutic playing aids. After the implementation the above strategies, the nursing staff's recognition of aerosol therapy increased from 63.8% to 100% as expected. Additionally, the completion rate of aerosol therapy dramatically increased from 33.3% to 92.8%. The project improved the completion rate of aerosol therapy thus can provide references for other pediatric units. |
