葉克膜體維生外系統可以做為病人等待心臟功能恢復或心臟移植的橋樑、或容許病人的肺臟有休息的機會，恢復氣體交換的功能，於加護單位的應用越來越頻繁，此維生系統的缺點在於成本昂貴、人力耗時及治療所帶來的副作用。經由系統性的觀察及評估病人可以有比較好的預後。加護病房的護理人員於使用葉克膜體外維生系統之病人的照護品質扮演重要的角色。當照護這些病危的病人時能對葉克膜體外維生系統有多一點的了解及早預防此系統可能產生的合併症是極為重要。本篇內容期能提供臨床照護此類病人的參考。

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is becoming more frequently used in ICUsettings. The use of ECMO can help the heart recover or serve as a bridge for a patient waitingheart transplantation and or adequate gas exchange, allowing time for the lungs to recover. Thedisadvantages to ECMOinclude cost, staffing issues, and increased complications related to treatment.The observation of all organ systems and thorough assessments can help lead to positive outcomes.The ICU nurse is a key component of the ECMO team in providing quality care to a patient withECMO.
