Introduction to Multiple Umbilical Cord Blood Transplatation

早在1974年Knudtzon證實了臍帶血中含有血球的原始細胞後，1988年Gluckman更成功的為一名先天性再生不良性貧血的兒童實行了首例臍帶血造血幹細胞移植。從此長久以來一直被當成廢棄物丟掉的胎盤和臍帶在醫學應用上有了全新的評價，也造就了臍帶血的收集及利用快速的成長。資料中顯示，臍帶血移植應用於成人惡性疾病的治療上只有占全部臍帶血移植病例的1/4不到，理由是單一臍帶血量少，不足以應付成人移植的需求，因此運用多源混合臍帶血移植也就是混合兩個不同新生兒的臍帶血，以增加造血幹細胞數量，來克服血量不足的障礙，而將廣泛應用到成人病患身上。

Knudtzon proved that there were hematopoietic progenitor cells in cord blood in 1974, and Gluckman made the first and successful of cord blood transplantation on a SAA child. From that moment, placenta and umbilical cord , long before viewed as useless , became valuable sources for medical treatment. Therefore, the gathering and utilization of umbilical cord blood are growing rapidly. The data showed that umbilical cord blood transplantation for adults accounted for less than 25% of the total umbilical cord blood transplantation cases. One reason of this came from the shortage of one-unit umbilical cord blood. Consequently, multiple umbilical cord blood, which combined two different new born babies' umbilical cord blood, was used to raise the number of blood stem cells in the umbilical cord blood. With this method, the shortage of umbilical cord blood for transplantation will be eased. The treatment and umbilical cord blood transplantation will also be widely applied to adult patients.
