Knudtzon proved that there were hematopoietic progenitor cells in cord blood in 1974, and Gluckman made the first and successful of cord blood transplantation on a SAA child. From that moment, placenta and umbilical cord , long before viewed as useless , became valuable sources for medical treatment. Therefore, the gathering and utilization of umbilical cord blood are growing rapidly. The data showed that umbilical cord blood transplantation for adults accounted for less than 25% of the total umbilical cord blood transplantation cases. One reason of this came from the shortage of one-unit umbilical cord blood. Consequently, multiple umbilical cord blood, which combined two different new born babies' umbilical cord blood, was used to raise the number of blood stem cells in the umbilical cord blood. With this method, the shortage of umbilical cord blood for transplantation will be eased. The treatment and umbilical cord blood transplantation will also be widely applied to adult patients. |
