In general, there are two approaches of airport common-use counter assignment, namely fixed and variable number of counter assignments. The latter is more efficient than the former in terms of counter utilization. In the literature, there was only a little research on the assignment of common-use counters. However, none of them employed a systematic optimization approach to the assignment of variable number of common-use counters. Hence, in this research the objective of minimizing total passenger walking distance is coupled with the constraint of allowable inconsistency of flight-to-common-use-counter in different time windows with variable number of counters and other related operating constraints, for developing a model to help airport autorities solve common-use counter assignments. The model is factors that have to be considered, the problem size of the model is expected to be huge in practice, making the model difficult to optimally solve. Therefore, a heuristic method is developed to solve the model. Finally, to the how well the proposed model and the solution algorithm could be applied to real world, ew performed numerical tests referring to a taiwan international airport operation with suitable assumptions. The preliminary results are affirmative. |
