Shigellosis is an acute gastroenteritis, which is transmitted by the fecal-oral route. The risk of Shigella has been shown to be higher in immunocompromised patients. Shigellosis can also be a sexually transmitted infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) to cause outbreaks and circulation in shigellosis low-risk regions. Here, we present a case of Shigella flexneri dysentery in a patient with HIV infection, to investigate the challenge of conventional laboratory techniques versus automated identification systems in differentiating between Shigella species and Escherichia coli. |
