The purpose of this study was to develop the Inventory of Mathematics Academic Engagement (IMAE) for junior high school students in Taiwan. To validate the inventory, the preliminary scale was developed based on literature reviews, item analysis, and exploratory factor analysis of 347 participants, and the formal scale was established by confirmatory factor analysis of 1,290 participants, and cross-validation of 351 participants. The results revealed that (1) The IMAE consisted of 41-items with three secondorder factors, which were cognitive engagement, affective engagement, and behavior engagement. (2) The IMAE had reasonable coefficient of internal consistency reliability and stability. (3) The criterion-related validity seemed to be good when taking the math self-concept, math self-efficacy, and mathematics achievement as criteria. (4) Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the IMAE had acceptable construct validity and the proposed model has stability after examining the cross-validation. In sum, the IMAE is a practical tool with good reliability, validity, and stability. It can be offered to the educators for evaluating junior high school students' learning engagement in mathematics and proceeding further researches. |
