The annual update of the ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Re-porting in fiscal year 2021, the effective date of this new version has been October 1 for the implementation date of the updated version since the beginning of ICD-9-CM era. There-fore, the coding guidelines presented in this article will take effect in all health care institu-tions in the United States from October 1, 2021. Comparing with the previous year's (2020) version, the coding and reporting guide-lines of the U.S., both disease and operation or procedures classification, in 2021 have been revised in 22 features in ICD-10-CM, of which 14 are added and 8 revised. In terms of ICD-10-PCS, there are 4 features, including 2 features for addition and 2 issues for revision. This article intends to use the National Center for Health Information Statistics (NCHS) under the U.S. Department of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to compare the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and reporting guidelines in 2021. The new or revised information after the 2020 edition is provided for reference to our colleagues in Taiwan being concerned about the development of the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding features. It also provides our National Health Insurance Administration with a new version of coding in the future planning. |
