In order to strictly control the free flow of information on the Chinese Internet, Chinese government enact a set of laws and regulations which treat the Internet in the same manner as traditional media and, on some occasions, harsher on the Internet than on the traditional media. The author argues that because of the lack of the watchdog media in China to counterbalance the government power, the Internet has a huge potential to bring about a particapatory political culture. As an empowering medium which is still under a lot of developments, the Internet should be guaranteed a freer space for expression. |
