In Hong Kong's run-up to the Chinese rule, broadcasting in the Britain's last colony has recorded, been affected by, and served as agents to the social changes. This study explores the interplay between sovereignty change and the role of broadcasting in the context of Hong Kong. Specifically, the paper examines what role broadcasting in Hong Kong has played and how that role has been affected by the city's destined reversion to the Chinese rule. Regulatory problems in tems of broadcasting are analyzed and the case of PTHK is singled out for examination so as to shed more light on the impact of sovereignty change on broadcasting. The paper also discusses the future of broadcasting after Hong Kong's sovereignty is handed over to the new Chinese master and probes the reasons behind many people's uncertainty. |
