The purpose of this study was to explore a sports education model applied to foster sports competencies and cultural literacy among college students in a volleyball class. The participants were 60 college students engaged in this class at a university. The methods included single-group pretest-posttest design, an interview, document analysis, and participant observation. The results were as follows: The sports education used in the volleyball course nurtured the participants’ sports competencies such as necessary skills and knowledge of the competitive volleyball rules. It also developed their cultural literacy such as sports enjoyment, team cooperation, interacting with others, determination to make an effort, appreciate competition, and sports promotions. In conclusion, the sports education model is a helpful instructional model and was used in the volleyball course described above to enhance the participants’ sports competencies and cultural literacy. Physical education teachers can employ the sports education model to improve their students’ learning outcomes and motivation. |
