The secessionist movement in southern Philippines has lasted for a long time and become the most serious ethnic conflict in the country. In addition to ethnic diversity, the secessionist movement has coincided with a religious faultline. Furthermore, due to the intervention of foreign powers, this ethnic conflict was enlarged to a war of civilizations. This paper, inspired by Samuel Huntington's insight on civilization, explores the factors behind the clash of civilizations in the Philippines as well as the relationship between foreign involvement and the secessionist movement in southern Philippines. |
