At a historic Inter-Korean Summit in Pyongyang, the two leaders signed a wideranging agreement that not only dismantled the Cold War structure that divided the peninsula a half-century ago but also has improved reconciliation, cooperation, and peace between the North and South. Any resulting unification will, moreover, have a great impact on the situation in northeast Asia, across the the Taiwan Strait, and in the Asia Pacific region. The South and North agreed to hold ministerial talks(at the defense minister level)and discussions via the Red Cross in order to implement the joint declaration and the items agreed on at the Inter-Korean Summit. The historic summit has helped build mutual trust and confidence between the two Koreas and will promote closer economic exchanges and cooperation in the future.Based on the reconciliation and perhaps even reunification of the two Koreas, the US may have to revise its strategy by withdrawing troops from South Korea and constructing both a national missile defense and a theater missile defense in East Asia. China has benefited form the summit: Beijing appears to have wielded effective influence on the Korean Peninsula. Japan and Russia are also back into the Korean game. It is also important for cross-strait relations that both Taiwan and China should work together to build mutual trust and establish a foundation for peaceful coexistence. |
