The Liberal Democratic Party alone won more than half the seats in the lower house in the December 2012 election; moreover, with its partner the New Komeito Party, the coalition power achieved more than a two-thirds majority which makes it easier for the government to break policy deadlocks and to enact legislation even if it is rejected by the upper chamber. Nevertheless, despite the victory, there are challenges facing the new Abe Cabinet. This paper deals with the crisis the new Abe Cabinet is facing in terms of the Divided Diet predicament and the pubic opinions in the lower house election. It also analyzes the countermeasures adopted by the new Abe Cabinet which aim to win a majority in the upper house election in July 2013. |
