China is suspicious not only of Japan's National Defense Program Guidelines (NDPG) adopted by the Security Council and the Cabinet in December 2011 but also of the US alliance strategy in the Asia Pacific. China's suspicion is directed at the possibility of a shared sense of China threat among neighboring countries and the strengthening US-led alliance network in this region. However, China's tone of expressing this anxiety is relatively placid, implying that there is an argument within the Chinese government, which includes the People's Liberation Army (PLA), about how the country should express its anxiety and cope with a deteriorating security situation for China. |
