The aim of this study is to probe into the immediate effect and long-term effect of group art therapy on emotional competency of elementary school students. The study used one-group pretest-posttest design, and the participants were Grade 4 students of some elementary school. In order to review the effect of the group, participants’ data on "Elementary School and Junior High School Students’ Emotional Competency Scale" were collected three times: before and after the group art therapy and a month after the therapy ended. In order to understand the participants’ status of changes after joining the group, the group’s participants also provided written feedback and a focused group interview was conducted as well. This study has found that group art therapy has immediate effect on children’s emotional competency. As for the long-term effect after one month’s process, there is a long-term counseling effect on the emotional transforming competency and emotional adjustment competency. Finally, in accordance with the above mentioned results and discussion of the study, a number of specific suggestions have been proposed, in order to serve as a reference for application of counseling and for future studies. |
