Objective: Few studies regarding the relationship between gout and cancer in females have been reported. Thus, we are interested in delving into the incidences of cancers in female gout patients in Taiwan.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study explores the association between gout and cancer in females over the age of 20. Based on the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) records of cancer incidence, our study included 4612 female gout patients matched to 17082 controls by age and first-diagnosed month and year. The cancer case was identified while a new cancer occurred after one year of gout diagnosis; the cancer risk was evaluated by age-standardized incidence ratio and proportional hazard ratio.
Results: Female gout patients had higher incidence of all-cause cancer, kidney cancer, renal cell cancer and hepatoma, and lower incidence of uterine and cervical cancers. While comparing to controls, female gout patients under age of 50 years revealed the incident risk of all-cause cancer, kidney cancer, renal cell cancer, hepatoma and colorectal cancer were higher (p<0.05). As concerning on those female gout patients age <50 years, the incident risk of all-cause cancer, kidney cancer, renal cell cancer and protective effect of uterine and cervical cancers (p<0.05) showed significant association compared to controls.
Conclusion: Female gout patients had higher incidence of all-cause cancer, especially for kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma and hepatoma, and lower incidence of uterine and cervical cancers. Furthermore, those age <50 years of gout patients are more prone to suffer from cancer than those age ≥50 years.
