With two theoretical tools anchoring on difference and equality, this paper provides a multiculturalistic analysis of the origin, possibility and limitation of the preservation of Chuan-Tsun, military housing communes in Taiwan. The author tries to specify the circumstances and consequences of this preservation. While the preservation of Chuan-Tsun appears to result from some residents’ effort to conserve their childhood memory, it is also a public recognition of all the diverse historical experiences and collective memories in terms of Taiwan’s socio-demographic composition and cultural heritage. In addition to an emphasis on recognizing difference, it is argued that we need to take equality-related issues into serious consideration regarding the preservation of Chuan-Tsun before we can achieve a solid understanding of Taiwan as a multicultural society. |
