In relevant studies on textbooks, researchers have revealed gender stereotypes and gender bias in the illustrations. This study focused on the question of whether the body shapes of the characters in the illustrations in health and physical education textbooks are contingent on gender. Content analysis and textual analysis were conducted. A total of 2,967 characters were coded in the illustrations of seventh to ninth grade Hanlin and Kang-Hsuan textbooks. The findings of this study are as follows: (1)The body shapes of characters in the illustrations are contingent on gender. Thin female people are presented more than average-weight and overweight people in the Hanlin health textbook, and in both the Hanlin and Kang-Hsuan physical education textbooks. (2) Overweight people are illustrated as unhealthy. Therefore, it is recommended that diverse body shapes be presented in textbooks to prevent the perpetuation of obesity stigmas. |
