Most methanol intoxication occurs after oral ingestion. We report a rare case of enemainduced methanol intoxication. A 62-year-old woman was told a methanol enema could resolve constipation, so she tried an enema with a methanol-containing glycerin ball. She came to our emergency department because of acute abdominal pain. Several hours later she became unconscious. She was intubated, placed on hemodialysis and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) because of severe acidosis resulting from methanol intoxication. The blood methanol was 166 mg/dL. Pneumonia developed during hospitalization and she was readmitted to the ICU. She was discharged smoothly after 30 days hospitalization with the sequela of blurred vision. Enemas can induce complications and methanol intoxication can be induced by an enema. |
