This study designed and selected an innovative three-dimensional (3D) speed reduction colored marking (red-blue-white) for field tests. Road users were surveyed after the implemenation of the innovative markings. A before and after study was conducted to compare the speed distributions before and after the innovative markings were installed. According to the road users' survey results, 91.5% of road users found the 3D speed reduction colored markings obvious or very obvious during the daytime, but only 47.5% road users thought the markings were obvious at night. 77% of passenger car drivers and 71% of motorcyclists said that they slowed down when passing the marking area; the speeds comparisons found that regardless of time of day, passenger cars in the marking area decreased their mean speed by 1.8-5.4 km/h after the installation of markings. The 85th percentile speed also reduced 3.0-7.0 km/h. The impact of the marking on other vehicle types vary depending on the test locations. The ratio of speeding also decreased in most cases after the installation of 3D colored markings. |
