This paper describes the meaning of ”(shi)soda” that expresses anticipation of event occurrence in modern Japanese. The conclusions are as follows.(1) First, it was shown clearly that the meanings of affirmative sentence of ”(shi)soda” are [just before], [anticipation], [guess by characteristic], and the common meaning of those is ”possibility of event occurrence”.(2) The negative sentences of ”(shi)soda” as ”-na(sa)soda” and ”(shi)so ni/mo nai” express ”possibility of event un-occurring”, including [anticipation] and [guess by characteristic]. In addition to the meaning ”possibility of event un-occurring”, the negative sentences of ”(shi)soda” also means [anticipation reversing] by the negative form ”(shi)sodewanai”.(3) ”-na(sa)soda” and ”(shi)so ni/mo nai” are common to the meaning ”possibility of event occurrence”, but the degree of the possibility is not the same. The reliability of possibility means by ”(shi)so ni/mo nai” is higher than ”-na(sa)soda”. |
