When utilizing newspapers in Japanese language education, it is usually the teacher that chooses the article(s) to be featured. It cannot be rare, however, to happen that there is a mismatch in the interest of the both sides. Bridging the gap could not only accommodate the learners' motivation to the aim which is settled by the teacher, but also in advance, invoke their ability to problem-finding for understanding of actual Japanese society.This paper introduces in detail the way to apply the concept of NIE (Newspaper in Education) to classes in ”Japanese in newspapers”, and reports a practical case which served the learners a whole newspaper as a teaching material, putting selection of articles into their hands. This task makes them possible to do a closer look into Japan by extracting familiar events in Japanese society condensed in newspapers. Furthermore, the learners are advised to survey related information on ”(un)recognized” articles for making a brief summary. By encouraging learners to take a further step from a need in sending to a contact to interested events, the present practice invokes an ability to analyze problems, which learners ought to hold. It is a task to transform the learners' interest to their motivation to learn, and has a tie to cultivating ”an ability to find something”, that is, an ability to recognize a locus of a problem derived from an article in newspapers from their own point of view. |
