A 58-year-old female patient suffered from difficult bowel movement and recurrent constipation, accompanied abdominal pain and distension three years ago. Under the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, she consulted different doctors, took stool softeners, probiotics, dietary fiber and so on; however, no obvious change showed. She started to take a specific Japanese over-the-counter medicine from one year ago, and felt improvement with worryingly increasing dosage. Itchy rash on extremities appeared one month ago also. Therefore, she visited our Chinese Medical department for treatment. After taking herbal medicine that move qi and tonify spleen, nourish blood and moisten dryness, discharge heat and remove stagnation, her symptoms were gradually soothed. Moreover, health and self-care instructions based on gut-brain axis theory was given. She had regular bowel movement without the Japanese over-the-counter medicine in six weeks. |
