The prevalence of dementia has increased twofold with the growth of the elderly population. Many studies have confirmed that non-pharmacological interventions can reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in patients and improve their quality of life. As one of the non-pharmacological interventions for dementia care, drama therapy is a combination of theater and psychotherapy that uses the process of performance to promote behavioral change and psychological development. Many foreign studies have found that drama therapy has positive effects on dementia care. However, there has been no research about this issue in Taiwan. Therefore, this article examined the current application of drama therapy in dementia care in foreign countries and analyzed related difficulties encountered in Taiwan, including drama therapists and application methods, procedures and teaching plans, and drama therapy research. Based on these difficulties, this article provided relevant suggestions for the future application, promotion, or research of drama therapy in dementia care in Taiwan.
