The following paragraphs attempt to explore emotional diseases associated with one of the seven emotions, surprise, starting from unveiling the Mawangdui Silk Books. The Meridian of Foot-Yangming commonly describes emotional diseases associated with surprise. It has been documented in several ancient books and different descriptions have been added chronologically. Zu Bi Shi Yi Mai Jiu Jing described it with “many types of peak illnesses”, and Yin Yang Shi Yi Mai Jiu Jing described it with “When it is extreme, then there is recession. Patients have an aversion to other people and to fire. When they hear the sound of wood, they are scared and frightened. When they are frightened, they wish to be alone and to stay home with doors and windows closed. When the disease is extreme, then they wish to climb on elevations and to sing, to run around with their clothes thrown off. This is called shin recession”. Meridian Chapter in Ling Su revised two descriptions in Yin Yang Shi Yi Mai Jiu Jing, and added one more article of “borborygmus and abdominal distension”. This manuscript attempts to examine the justifications of this revision in Ling Su based on two chapters, maijie and yangming maijie, in Su wen, and adds in one missing article, “Make them utter absurd words and voice insults, without sparing those near or distant to him”. The author of Ling Su concluded signs and symptoms, classifications and choices of meridian for treatment in emotional diseases associated with surprise in Chapter 22 Dian Kuang, and this chapter not only utilized the Meridian of Foot-Yangming, but also included the Meridian of Foot-Yangming and Hand-Yangming, the Meridian of Foot-Taiyang and Hand-Taiyang and the Meridian of Foot-Taiyin and Hand-Taiyin. |
