This study focuses on the health benefits of a traditional herbal remedy, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, with emphasis on anti-inflammatory effects of the herbal extracts with a cell-based experimental model. Scutellaria baicalensis distributes in China, Russia, Mongolia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Numerous traditional uses of Scutellaria baicalensis are reviewed in this article. The health benefits of Scutellaria baicalensis includes anti-infection, anti-cancer, hepatitis, and high blood pressure. RAW 264.7 cell line, a mouse macrophage cell line, was employed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the extract of Scutellaria baicalensis. The results showed that the aqueous extract could significantly inhibit the production of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitric oxide (NO), two pro-inflammatory mediators, induced by bacterial polysaccharide LPS. The inhibition rates for IL-6 and NO production were 81.6% and 47.8%, respectively. However, no inhibitory effect on the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) production was observed. Cytotoxicity assay also showed that the Scutellaria baicalensis extract exhibited little cytotoxicity to the macrophage cells. Further scientific studies are still needed in order to provide recommendations of using Scutellaria baicalensis for health and safety management. |
