Phyllanthus emblica L. (synonym Emblica officinalis) is commonly referred to as the Indian fruit or Indian gooseberry. Among Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), P. emblica is widely used as an edible (tonic) plant and the application of disease treatment. For previous studies in this kind of field, it was found that Phyllanthus Emblica (PE) is effective in the treatment of human-related diseases and symptoms, and the safety and toxicity of this herb are also fully discussed. According to previous studies found that P. emblica possess various pharmacological effects, including anti-microbial, anti-oxidation, analgesic, antipyretic, liver-protecting, antitumor and anti-ulcer. And it can be e a human disease relief substance. This study tested the inflammatory response-related cytokine production-regulating activity of PE in Taiwan, and analyzed the changes of three common inflammatory factors, including nitric oxide (NO), cytokine interleukin 6 ( IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) of their toxicity analysis. The results showed that PE in Taiwan has anti-inflammatory effects on macrophage cell line activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). It can inhibit 39.4% of NO, and inhibit LPS of its IL-6 reach18.2%; but no effect on inhibiting of TNF-α. At the same time, no toxicity was found in the cells tested. Nonetheless, there is a need for more high-quality related research on the therapeutic effects of PE to provide recommendations for health management for its potential use. |
